31 January 2011

The Nerd is thanking Mother Nature.

Good day, fine readers!

I am currently jubilant, because tomorrow, I won't have to wake up before the sunrise and waste my day away in school. I can instead wake up around midday and waste my day in my home, because tomorrow is a SNOW DAY! Yeah! (epic guitar solo)

So, my current plan for the evening is to not care about when I hit the hay and just watch a lot of good films. So I've quite the evening ahead of me. With that, let's recount the day's events.

In English this morning, we finished Waiting for Godot, a beautiful absurdist work of art. It is quite literally fantastic if you've never had the pleasure of reading it or seeing it on stage. However, the event is bittersweet, because now I no longer have an excuse to wear my bowler hat in class. In History, we were assigned an epic debate project where students will take on the roles of historians of different schools of history and historical figures and host a trial where the people who are thought to have responsibility for starting the Cold War will be interrogated. I literally ran to the sign-up list to ensure I would be portraying President Harry S. Truman, a hero of sorts for me. Honestly, he found himself in a really crappy situation and took it in stride. He ended the Second World War, and although the recovery for the nation was hard and depressing (economically AND literally), he still managed to get a second term. Because he's a badass. A badass who I will have the immense pleasure and honor of portraying in my History class. Spanish, as always, kind of sucked. We had a quiz of Hispanic-american countries (capitals and adjectives of nationalities), and I think that went well, actually. However, I feel as though I might have misspelled a few, and to get points on the quiz, the spelling must be flawless, so I think I'll be losing a few points in that regard. Whatever. I hate that class. Then in Band, we did...the ordinary thing that happens in Band. Pretty standard.

Due to the weather, all after school activities were cancelled, and therefore I cannot report on a musical rehearsal today, because there wasn't one.

WARNING: Romance Paragraph Ahead!

Well, things are stagnant as hell. I finally saw her today after her week away, and we exchanged a few words and a hug, but that's about it. On another note, there's another female friend of mine who I simply cannot read. She's insanely sweet and cool, but she's not single. So whenever she talks to me or hugs me, I can't tell if she's just being really nice or if she's flirting. The latter really doesn't seem probable, firstly because she has a boyfriend and secondly, why in the name of God would a woman flirt with me? Whatever. I guess time will tell in this situation.

So, we've conquered another Monday, readers, and therefore, it's time to reward ourselves with...

COOL YOUTUBE VIDEO MONDAY! (applause or lack thereof)

Today's clip is a song from one of my favorite YouTube channels, schmoyoho, the people behind Auto-Tune the News. This, however, is a song made by Auto-Tuning the infamous "Double Rainbow" video, which everyone should know of by now. It's actually a decent enough song, and, as it is with most cases involving Auto-Tune, it's freaking hilarious. Enjoy.

To further prove my point on how Auto-Tune is one of the greatest inventions in the history of mankind, here's another video where Weird Al Yankovic helps the Know Your Meme team explain the history of Auto-Tune. Because few things are funnier than Weird Al using the I am T-Pain iPhone app and singing "Shortay!" Enjoy.

And with that, I'll close off the day's post with one last fun video, a cover of the Weebl's Stuff classic Amazing Horse ("Look at my horse! My horse is amazing!" Yeah, you know it...) courtesy of Italian electro-nerd-rock band The Nerd Follia. See you tomorrow, folks!

This concludes the posting of The Mindless Ramblings of the Nerd for 31 January 2011. I hope to see you tomorrow for another exciting installment!

("Get on my horse, I'll take you 'round the universe and all the other places, too!" "I think you'll find that the universe pretty much covers everything." "Shut up, woman! Get on my horse!")

30 January 2011

The Nerd played the bass and changed his oil today.

Today was pretty good. In fact, it was downright awesome.

I woke up at 10 with my friends, and my mother and I had breakfast with them and their family. Then I left around noon to go visit my father and learn how to change a tire and perform an oil change. It was time-consuming and kind of sucked, but I'm quite glad to know how to do both tasks in case an emergency occurs. I can imagine being stuck on the side of a desert road in the middle of the night with a flat tire and not knowing what to do other than call AAA, even though I'm not a AAA member, and believe me, that's a much worse scenario than being able to put on the spare tire and go on driving. Afterwards, I got together with a few musician friends of mine and practiced the song we're auditioning for the talent show with, a cover of Muse's "Supermassive Black Hole" from their album Black Holes and Revelations. It sounds pretty awesome, and we're pretty sure we're gonna rock it hardcore. And then I came home, did some homework and now sit here.

So, we're a few weeks away from the most important night of the year for my inner film buff: The 83rd Academy Awards. Seriously, I love the Oscars to the extent that I host a party where formalwear is required. It's nuts. But with the nominations having just been announced, I thought I might take a space to give you all my bets on what's going to win this year.

WARNING: ROMANCE PARAGRAPH INBOUND.

What is there to say that hasn't already been said? She's on my mind a lot and I haven't seen her since two Fridays ago. Really nothing further to report for the day.

And now, it's Sunday, so let's first celebrate the one-week anniversary of the blog, and then get the week rolling with a brand spankin' new...

QUOTE OF THE WEEK! {random "oohs" and "ahs" ensue}

"What is the most resilient parasite? Bacteria? A virus? An intestinal worm? An idea. Resilient... highly contagious. Once an idea has taken hold of the brain it's almost impossible to eradicate. An idea that is fully formed - fully understood - that sticks; right in there somewhere." ~Dominic Cobb, Inception

And on that badass note, I think it's about time to end this post. Have a good week, loyal readers!

This concludes the posting of The Mindless Ramblings of the Nerd for 30 January 2011. I hope to see you tomorrow for another exciting installment!

29 January 2011

The Nerd is among nerds.

Well.

Today was kind of really sweet.

I woke up at 5 AM, got to Copper Mountain, and I skied like there was no tomorrow. For any folks familiar with Copper, the Spaulding Bowl was godly today. Like, heavenly multitudes, winged seraphs, "Hallelujah, I am saved" godly. And I continued to ski until my legs were about the consistency of gelatin. When I returned home at around 5, I called up my buddy Adam and his brother Austin and we all went out to dinner at Red Robin. After some deliberation as to what we should do after dinner, we drove down to Twist and Shout Records downtown. We browsed around in the monstrous shop for about an hour, then proceeded to return to my apartment, where we are now.

WARNING: (Very brief) Romance Paragraph ahead. You have been warned.

There's not a great deal to report. She's still on my mind a lot. Yet I haven't spoken to her recently, and I'm still under the assumption that she's probably uninterested. Ah well. Perhaps it's time to just let her go, unfortunately.

So, it's Saturday, and thus it is...

FILM RECOMMENDATION SATURDAY! (courtesy of the film connoisseur that is yours truly)

Tonight, as I write this, I am watching one of my all-time favorite B-movies of recent times; a little number starring the beloved Bruce Campbell (aka Ash Williams aka My Favorite Underrated Actor of the Entirety of the History of Cinema) as rock 'n' roll legend Elvis Presley entitled Bubba Ho-Tep. It's the story of Elvis, who hasn't died but is instead in an East Texas retirement home while an imposter is in the grave, who teams up with John F. Kennedy, (whose wounded brain was recovered, his body restored and his skin dyed black to disguise himself,) to defeat an evil Egyptian mummy dressed like a cowboy. Now, if this sounds like an awful concept to you, it's because it is. But to the surprise of every person I've ever shown it to, Bubba Ho-Tep has determined that it's actually insanely well-performed. It's a really fantastic film, and honestly, if you love Bruce Campbell as much as I do and you HAVEN'T seen this film, then shame on you. Seriously, go check it out. It may be a kind of sort of bad film, but goddamn if is isn't entertaining.

So, it's been a short post, but what're you gonna do? I have some Bruce Campbell to watch. Peace out.

This concludes the posting of The Mindless Ramblings of the Nerd for 29 January 2011. I hope to see you tomorrow for another exciting installment!

28 January 2011

So...it doth be late in the evening once more, as 'twas in the posting of yesterday. (Also, 'tis Olde-Fashioned Friday.)

Salutations to you all, persons of the world wide web!

Today be Olde-Fashioned Friday, and thus the posting of the blogge for this day shall be scrolled with flamboyant slang from yesteryear! On that note, allow me to go forth and discuss the happenings of this day.

Upon the cacophony of mine clock's alarm sounding, I lay in my bed refusing to awaken. However, life got the best of me, and arose I did from my slumber. I bathed, and proceeded to wear clothing of a more casual persuasion than normal, because I was fully aware that this day in the schoolhouse would be a simple and relaxing one. And indeed I was correct. In Biology, we were witness to a video narrated by the keen and sleek Brad Pitt, an actor whom I admire a great deal. In yon course of Acting, we witnessed scenes from our classmates done in total silence, and saw a bit of brilliant acting by a fine lad, Mr. Daniel Day-Lewis. During mine hour of liberation, I dined with my friends and had a modest meal at Burger's Plus, an establishment serving fine hamburgers and the like. And in mine Mathematics course, mine ears were tuned to a very long lecture, and I proceeded to do very little after the fact.

In yon rehearsal for the musical theatre production, mine body was subject to the torture of "Fosse fingers," named for the choreographer Bob Fosse, whom is responsible for their fame, among other strange contortions of the body as I, along with fellow players, were educated upon the ways of choreography for a musical act in the production, entitled All That Jazz. This we did for the entirety of the rehearsal.

It is at this point that you, mine fair reader, reach the paragraph where I, thine humble narrator, speak of romance and love. If thou hast no interest in such quabbles, then I humbly invite thou to continue on past this.

Mine mistress hath returned on this day from her journey on the slopes of the fair mountains, educating the youths of the world, and thus, I am jubilant. However, I do doubt that I shall lay eyes upon her radiance until Monday, unless by some miraculous intervention she does call upon me over this end of the week, however, such things are very not likely at this point. Thus, I am still victim to thoughts of mine mistress, and swoon at such thoughts. I am under the belief that she thinks of me little, and although there is little thine narrator can do in the matter, think not that I shall not do as much as I see fit that I can in the matter.

It doth seem that the necessary aspects of yon fair posting have been accomplished, and thusly I see no need to continue on the posting of the blogge for today. Thusly, I bid mine readers the best of evenings, and retire to mine chambers to relax and rest before arising before the rising of the radiant Sun to journey far away to the peaks with mine devices of skiing and swoop with great speed and precision down the slopes. Fare thee well, friends.

This doth conclude the posting of the fair blogge The Mindless Ramblings of the Nerd for this day, the Twenty-eighth of January, Year of our Lord Two-Thousand and Eleven. I do hope that you shall return to this blogge tomorrow to bear witness to another wonderful, enthralling, and intellectually-stimulating posting!

<CONCLUSION OF LINEAGE>

27 January 2011

So...it's really late.

Wow...

I just got home from a pretty epic field trip where we saw a preview performance of the Denver Center Theater Company's rendition of A Midsummer Night's Dream, and, repeating what I just said...

Wow. If you're in the Denver area, I wholeheartedly recommend their portrayal of my favorite comedy by the Bard. The set was great, the costumes were great, the actors were fantastic (the gentlemen playing Lysander, Oberon, Bottom and Puck were my favorites), the slapstick humor was great, and all and all, it was a fabulous production. Seriously. Go check it out. Stage Theatre. Denver Performing Arts Complex. You'll love it. Yes, even you...

So that was a fun part of the day, as was rehearsal, as was English, where we continued to read Waiting for Godot. Hell, I even had a bit of fun in Band, because I love to play music.

Spanish and History? Well, History was alright. We read Dr. Seuss' The Butter Battle Book, obvious parallels to the Cold War and all, then I'm pretty sure I kind of sucked on my quiz. Spanish, however, was another story. We had oral examinations today, where we were meant to talk about what we did over the past weekend. I had written it all out, I had read it and had it memorized. But when I went up there, a very peculiar and evil thing happened. I was sailing smoothly until about 2 minutes in, when I completely crashed. I couldn't remember how to say words. I spent seconds of silence, which passed by like little eternities. I rushed through the remains of my speech, and got lectured for my unpreparedness, even though I had practiced for some time. Spanish: The bane of my existence...ah well. Win some, lose some.

WARNING: YOU HAVE REACHED THE ROMANCE PARAGRAPH. IF YOU HAVE NO INTEREST IN THE LOVE LIFE OF THE NERD, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SKIP AHEAD.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Not much to report today. She's still away in the mountains, and I haven't seen her all week. Regardless, she remains on my mind a great deal, and quite honestly, I now have no doubt whatsoever that I have some form of feelings for her. Mind you, I'm aware I have more odds of becoming an NFL Rookie, having the team stupid enough to pick me go to the Super Bowl, and being dubbed the MVP. Obviously, the odds are pretty much 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,009:1. But so long as I keep my hopes high, I may very well succeed...maybe.

ANYHOW, today, much like every day, there's something special to do, and today is...

COOL NERD PRODUCT THURSDAY! [buy stuff! yay!]

Today's product can be found on...well, I don't know where in the name of God you can find this, but if I was a little kid and if I were as obsessed with Doctor Who as I am now...yeah. I'd so fork over 199 pounds for one. Take a look at the promotional video below, and you'll see why.

That's right, folks! Now your own children can pretend to be the hateful, evil killing machines that have been relentlessly trying to destroy the entire human populus since 1963!

Teach your kids that exterminating their fellow man is perfectly alright!

They'll soon be just like the infamous creations of Davros, the Nazis of the Universe, the Daleks!

And it'll only cost you about $320! Yay!

On that hilarious note, I bid you all a lovely evening.

This concludes the posting of The Mindless Ramblings of the Nerd for 27 January 2010. I hope to see you tomorrow for another exciting installment! (Hopefully earlier in the night...)

25 January 2011

The Nerd is...well...he doesn't quite know.

Hello, my dear viewers who are still reading this thing after three posts. You are genuine troopers for lasting so long.

SO, today was kind of...meh, really. If "meh" could be used as an adjective. WHICH IT CAN.

In my English class, we began reading Samuel Beckett's absurdist masterwork Waiting for Godot and, being the spirited actor I am, I am reading the part of Vladimir, whom was once played by one of my heroes, Sir Patrick Stewart. In History, we had a substitute with a genuine Tommy Wiseau-esque accent and read some articles about the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. In Spanish*, we talked about grammar for a God awful long time and started individually talking about what we did over the weekend. Then I went with a freshman friend for lunch at the Hamburger Stand. And to finish the school day off, Band was pretty average. We played instruments, which is what one is supposed to do in a Band class.

At rehearsal, ensemble spent a lot of time just sitting around, but by day's end, we had blocked every bit of dialogue in the production. And now we start choreographing musical numbers. And I still love my Master of Ceremonies line.

But after rehearsal, a friend and fellow cast member was talking about an ex-girlfriend of mine/best friend of hers, and blatantly pointed me out and called me an asshole. This lead me to contemplate my actions in the past involving her, the exact OPPOSITE of what I'd like to do at the moment.** So I drove home in a really crappy mood and now find myself here.

(The following paragraph is what I will now refer to as "The Romance Paragraph." If you have no interest in my love life, or lack thereof, please feel free to skip ahead. You have been warned.)

On another note, there is no real progress with that girl I was speaking of the other day. She's gone up to be a counselor for elementary school kids in the mountains this week, and thus I shall see very little of her. But, while I'm in a state of romanticism, I think I'll talk a bit about her. She was always pretty much just a classmate of mine until I went to a party she hosted way back in August and spent a long series of hours in her company having an excellent time. I think it was from that point on that our relationship crossed the threshold of acquaintanceship and we started to become friends. Mind you, she still rarely speaks to me unless I start up a conversation, and in most scenarios I don't think she quite sees that I'm around, but all things considered, among the myriad of females who have found someone to spend their time with, she's one of those rare people who you totally think should be dating someone, but they aren't. Also, I think she could kill me with her smile. OK, Romance Paragraph over.

Now, today, just like every day of the week, we have a special occasion to deal with. And today is...

COOL PICTURE TUESDAY! {did you bring your coat?}

So, today's image is from my friend's archive album of silly things he finds among the evil, evil chaos of 4chan, which I presume a lot of images will come from for Tuesdays. It should be noted that I love the Muppets. And among those wacky characters, one of my absolute favorites is the accident-prone assistant to Dr. Bunsen Honeydew, Beaker. So it's obvious that I honestly can't keep myself from laughing when I see this.

On that hilarious note, I leave you all to contemplate existence...

...and do that damned Biology homework. Peace!

This concludes the posting of The Mindless Ramblings of the Nerd for 25 January 2011. I hope to see you tomorrow for another exciting installment!

24 January 2011

Mondays. They usually kind of suck.

Greetings, planet Earth!

Y'know, I may not share a lot of traits with the comic strip character Garfield, but there are two things we share: A love for lasagna, and a SHEER HATRED FOR MONDAYS.

I hate Mondays. Having an awesome weekend of escape from school, then having to go right back to the very thing you were attempting to get away from is the worst feeling ever. It doesn't help when due to sickness and Martin Luther King Day, this is the very first Monday I've had to undergo this semester.

BUT...

Strangely enough, today was kind of awesome. At school, I rocked my exam in Biology, had a lot of fun in Acting, went to Yogurtland and Kolache Factory during my off-block, and did virtually nothing in Math Studies. Some students would kill for a day so relaxed. Not to mention that I had a ball at rehearsal for my school's musical (Chicago) and I, a mere player in the Ensemble, have received the immense honor of getting to speak a line from the Master of Ceremonies (the one preceding the Cell Block Tango, if you're familiar with the show), and that's just plain freakin' awesome. As of now, I'm featured twice in the show outside of being an all-important background character. The first was just discussed, but I also get to perform the role of Harry, the guy who gets caught in bed with two women by his girlfriend and promptly gets a cap popped in his ass. (Pardon my "gangsta" terminology.)

SO YES. Today was pretty damn awesome in spite of being a Monday.

On another subject, let it noted for all readers of this blog that I am a hopeless romantic. So I'll probably write a lot about women that I admire/have feelings for in these posts, because sadly, it's a larger part of my existence than I'd like.

Now, there are plenty of girls out there I admire and wouldn't mind getting to know better and being in a relationship with, but most of them are dating other guys. However, there is one among them that I've really come to like a lot and who has recently been dumped by her now ex-boyfriend (What a dumbass...). Anyhow, she's insanely sweet, and really beautiful, and I probably stand more of a chance fighting the Rankor in the bottom of Jabba's Palace than hooking up with her, but hey. A guy can hope. She's talented, wonderful, and a really cool girl overall, and I'd love to just get closer to her as a friend, or better yet date her.

(Over the information superhighway, she'll obviously go unnamed. And for those that know me, no, I'm not saying anything.)

Now, since I'm done musing over my day, allow me to remind you all of the special occasion for this day of the week:

COOL YOUTUBE VIDEO MONDAY! [insert fanfare here]

So, today's video is a short independent film set in the mythos of Christopher Nolan's Batman films. I chose to share this video with you for two reasons.

I. I am a filmmaker, and at the moment, I myself am shooting a Batman fan film (an adaptation of Brian Azzarello's JOKER, if anyone's familiar with it.).

II. It's insanely well-executed in terms of acting and technical work. And whoever the director of photography is, I want to hug him.

Enjoy, and have a lovely evening.
